Put a miata engine and 5 speed into the dodge. Make it a DD. More power and better millage. Only weighs 2800 pounds with a heavy iron block 6 cylinder. Engine mounts couldn't be too hard. I have tons of space to fit it. I could keep the rear end too. What do you think?

WAIT UNTIL THEY CRATE THE 1.0L

But it's going to be $6000 for a 1.0 engine while I could get a 1.8 for around $1000 and have an entire internet's worth of support.

You're gonna miss the torque. Try something slightly bigger

Got me there. Either way you go it sounds awesome. But you'll have to change your username.

any ideas? Ideally something without a computer, because that would be the hardest part.
![]() 05/14/2014 at 21:24 |

More power perhaps, but what about torque? That's the big issue in a big ass car :)

Save your money and put in a Max Wedge

If you're going to bother with the hassle of an engine swap, you might as well put in a V8. As much as I like Miatas this is a really dumb idea.

do a ecodiesel swap...to keep it in the family and for the kids.

Slant4. I could slant it somehow. Or MYDAILYDRIVERWILLALWAYSBECOOLERTHANYOURDAILYDRIVER

I'd go a little bigger. You could yank an I6 out of an old 3 or 5er. Those were bulletproof and provided good power. Also, when you have the monies, buy 4 of these. Car looks great by the way.
![]() 05/14/2014 at 21:28 |

Either of those sound amazing.
![]() 05/14/2014 at 21:28 |

But the Dart of this era (until 67) was never supposed to be a muscle car. And v8s are heavy. And people don't DD their built up v8s because they drink to much.

280zx turbo would be rad tuning the slant six would honestly be your best bet. those things are amazing engines
![]() 05/14/2014 at 21:29 |

But it's just enough power to be close to stock and has EFI, a MT, and is light.
![]() 05/14/2014 at 21:31 |

Not a Miata engine, I'd call that ruining it.
A modern crate engine, that would be nice

The slant 6 would stay around for a future project. I really want to tune one up and shove it into a Beetle. I feel like that would be interesting.

That's a valid point. What about AWD electric motors?
![]() 05/14/2014 at 21:34 |

It's not that heavy! It's an American compact by 60's standards. 2800 pounds with an iron 225.
![]() 05/14/2014 at 21:35 |

I have them, I just think they look too nice for the car. And black steelies are honest and humble, like the car it's self.
![]() 05/14/2014 at 21:35 |

Not bad at all then, but I'd say that any MX-5/Miata engine would need a SC to handle that weight :)
![]() 05/14/2014 at 21:36 |

I can't think of another cheap RWD low displacement engine though. Crates are too expensive.

And kinda sinister looking. I posted about this two weeks ago.
![]() 05/14/2014 at 21:38 |

It would be sacrilege to the older Dodge guys. It just doesn't seem fitting at all. It would't sound right either.
![]() 05/14/2014 at 21:39 |

I know there were racy ones out there but a majority were slant6es driven by old ladies and teachers. Not all cars have to turn into race cars. I just want a fun DD that has class, and patina that isn't a rusted Golf.

What about a pentastar from a truck?
![]() 05/14/2014 at 21:43 |

1. Why do an engine swap to end up with similar power to stock?
2. It's not that light. Iron block.
![]() 05/14/2014 at 21:43 |

If it fits, it ships!
![]() 05/14/2014 at 21:50 |

Then don't put in a Miata engine. You have too much car for one. The amount that it would have to work would negate any fuel economy gains.
Just hop up your slant six. They still make performance parts for them.

look for a 318 V8 nice little small block mopar. or go the mainstream hot rod route and
350 small block chevy that.
or how about one of those odd overhead cam I6 Pontiac had
![]() 05/14/2014 at 21:58 |

The miata engine can barely push itself around...what about the 3.5 from the charger/300/magnum? Those are bound to be cheap now and you wouldn't give mopar snobs a heart attack if they looked under your hood.
![]() 05/14/2014 at 22:09 |

Why Miata crap? Drop in a Hartley V8 instead.
![]() 05/14/2014 at 22:19 |

Get one of the 4.7L V8's that they put in their work trucks. These should be waaaayyyy cheaper than getting a 5.7. I think you'll regret not putting a V8 in this later down the line.

Swap an Sr20....
![]() 05/14/2014 at 22:39 |

You could throw in a GM V6 out of a blazer or s10 or something for really cheap power, or you know... 440 swap.
![]() 05/14/2014 at 23:42 |
|
maybe a 3800 v6? still give you lots of room under the hood, as well as lots of room down the line if you wanted to make it into a Dart Grand National.
![]() 05/15/2014 at 01:19 |

I say don't put in an I4. An aluminum v6 or I6 would do the job, especially with forced induction.
![]() 05/15/2014 at 07:49 |
|
I'd go for a V6 from a Dakota. You can get them at Pull A Part. It would a bit more at home in there and still give reasonable MPG. Failing that how about a BMW I6?
